How to Configure Metal Detection on Food Production Lines

Configuration starts with the product and the hazard. Define the target metals and the smallest contaminant that must be detected, then establish the product effect: wet, salty, hot or conductive products generate signals that reduce sensitivity and require a lower operating frequency or phase discrimination. Aperture size should be the smallest that passes the product with clearance, since sensitivity improves as aperture shrinks. Confirm the operating environment, including washdown, temperature and vibration, and match the IP rating and construction to it. Test with real product samples and certified test pieces at the intended rejection points before finalizing the specification.

Line integration determines whether detection works in practice. Belt speed, product spacing and orientation affect the inspection window, so the detector must be sized for the throughput and reject timing. Select a rejection method, such as an air blast, pusher or retracting belt, and ensure the reject bin is locked and confirmed by a sensor. Locate the detector away from vibrating equipment, motors and metal structures that create interference, and verify that upstream and downstream conveyors do not couple noise into the head. Define the reject confirmation logic and the audit routine so that failed tests stop the line.

For procurement, specify performance in writing: test piece sizes for ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel, the product to be tested, and the acceptance criteria at commissioning. Require documented validation with product samples and support for periodic performance monitoring. Balance capital cost against false reject rates, since over-sensitive settings increase waste and operator workload. Consider future products and packaging, including metallized film, which may require X-ray inspection instead of metal detection. Finally, confirm spare parts, service response and training, and record all settings and test results so the configuration can be audited and repeated.
