How Needle Detectors Work and Their Applications

A needle detector is a common inspection device in the quality-control stage of light industries such as apparel, footwear and toys. Its purpose is to detect broken needles, iron filings and other ferromagnetic contaminants mixed into products. The core principle is magnetic-induction sensing: a magnetic field is established inside the device, and when a product containing ferromagnetic metal passes through the detection area, the metal disturbs the field and triggers an alarm or line stop.

Automatic conveyor needle detectors install directly on the production line. Products pass through the detection aperture on a conveyor belt while the device inspects and counts them, distinguishing good products, rejects and totals. The aperture size can be customized to the product, with common sizes starting from 600×100 mm and larger for garments, bedding and bags.

Needle detectors are widely used in garments, baby products, toys, home textiles, footwear and nonwovens to detect broken needles and metal contaminants. They are an important safeguard for export products that must meet customer quality requirements and avoid broken needles reaching the finished product.
